If you’re looking for awesome sound quality, all-day comfort, and great adaptive noise-canceling in a pair of over-ears, the Sony WH-1000XM3 should be on your radar.
While they don’t come cheap, we suspect invested listeners won’t mind spending a little more for a pair of cans that nail every aspect of what high-quality ANC over-ear headphones should be.
If you keep an eye on the headphone landscape, you’ve probably already heard of Sony’s WH-1000XM3 over-ear noise canceling wireless headphones.
And they’re not just great at ANC, they’re pretty great at just about everything.
The plush ear cups are exceedingly comfortable for long periods of time, the noise-canceling works like a charm, and—perhaps most importantly—the audio quality is out of sight.
The WH-1000XM3 checks off a bunch of the right boxes, and not just for noise-canceling headphones, but for headphones in general.
2. Sony WH-1000XM4
The Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones have it all: a lightweight design, comfort, the convenience of Bluetooth, and arguably the best noise-canceling currently on the market.
Oh, and they sound fantastic too. It’s no wonder we think they’re the best headphones you can buy right now.
They replace the WH-1000XM3 (which are also on Amazon, now at a bargain price), which were fantastic headphones in their own right.
But the XM4 take performance to a whole new level. They sound more detailed, more open, and clearer in their delivery. Low frequencies hit with even greater precision.
They’re super-comfortable too and offer useful new features such as Speak to Chat which allows you to hold a conversation without removing or touching the headphones.
A premium pair of headphones, no doubt, but worth every penny.
3. Puro PuroQuiet Noise Cancelling Headphones
While there are a million things for parents to worry about these days, noise-induced hearing loss is real—and pretty scary.
In our testing, we’ve shown that even the cheap earbuds that came with your phone are dangerous at full volume, especially for long periods of time.
PuroQuiet headphones come in two colors, blue and pink, and feature an on/over-ear design that will likely envelop the ears of young children but may only qualify as “on-ear headphones” for adults.

The PuroQuiet headphones are designed to be “volume-limited” headphones, meaning they have a maximum volume output of—according to Puro—85dB(a).

4. Bose QuietComfort 35 II
Bose has a devoted following, and with a pair of headphones like the QuietComfort 35 Series II, that’s not surprising.
The active noise cancellation (ANC), for which Bose is well-renowned, cuts out a wide range of noises from deep train rumbling to higher-pitched A/C humming.
The headphones are light and comfortable enough that they can be worn for hours at a time, although you may notice some heat or sweat build-up from where the cushy leather pads meet the sides of your head.
The 20-hour battery life is also a huge selling point. We tested the Bose QC35 Series I; really the only difference between the series I and series II is that with the series II, you can also activate and command the Google Assistant.
One tricky point is that, should you decide you don’t want to use the ANC (for safety reasons or otherwise), you’ll have to plug in and use them as wired headphones, since the Bluetooth switch doubles as the ANC on/off switch.
The price is steep; if you have a little bit more disposable income and want an outstanding pair of headphones, this is the pair for you.
5. AKG Y400
A fantastic addition to the world of wireless headphones.
The Y400 are a little smaller than the previous model (the splendid Y500), with smaller drivers and they come with a cable complete with in-line controls and mic, for when you don’t want to run down the battery with a wireless connection.
They’re colourful, too, coming in shimmery pink, green, blue and goldish-yellow finishes.
There’s no noise cancelling, but we wouldn’t expect it at this price. There is Ambient Aware mode, however, which lets in outside noise like dogs barking and car engines.
Handy if you want to avoid being bitten/run over. They automatically detect when you take them off and pause the music, too, saving you precious battery life.
The sound has much to like. It’s spacious and three-dimensional. There’s impeccable timing throughout and the headphones deliver bass weight and power in spades.
It’s zealous to the point that some might prefer a slightly leaner listen, but in our eyes (and at this level) the Y400 gets the balance just about right.

6. Apple AirPods Pro
The Apple AirPods Pro (available at Amazon for $199.00) true wireless earbuds are shockingly good.
Though they aren’t the best earbuds in terms of sound quality we’ve ever tested, they nail everything else you want in a pair of earbuds: they’re easy to use (even if you don’t have an iPhone), have great battery life, offer incredible noise cancellation, and the new design means they’ll—finally—fit your ears, even if traditional Apple earbuds don’t.
They’re the best headphones Apple has ever made and they’re so worth the money.
When Apple unveiled the first AirPods a few years ago, we were skeptical. Wireless earbuds are almost universally bad, with spotty connections, horrible battery life, and iffy durability.
Even with good wireless earbuds it’s common to see user reviews where more than 20% of people leave a 1-star review because their pair died.
Somehow, the AirPods had none of these issues, though they are impossible to repair and the tiny internal batteries are unlikely to last more than a couple of years.
The new AirPods Pro don’t solve the longevity issue, but they take everything that worked great in the original—dead-simple connectivity, great battery life, and a class-leading case that you can carry everywhere—and ramp it up to 11.
The new model now includes eartips so they’ll fit anyone’s ears (even if other Apple earbuds don’t) and active noise-cancellation.
Of course, the new model is also much more expensive than the original, with a $249 retail price (compared to $179 for the current non-Pro AirPods).
It’s pricey, but after testing them in our headphone lab and in the real world, it’s clear these are absolutely worth it.
7. Jabra Elite 85t True Wireless
Jabra’s Elite 85t really has it all: smooth and balanced sound, impressive active noise cancellation (ANC), comprehensive controls, a compact form factor, solid battery life, and a barrel full of other top-flight features.
It all adds up to the best wireless earbuds around—whether you pledge your allegiance to Android or iPhone.
Perhaps more than any one feature, it’s the open-style design of these earbuds that make them our favorite all-around bombers.
While a more bulbous design means fit isn’t quite as secure as their Elite 75t predecessors, the Elite 85t’s oval ear tips provide a proper seal without plugging up your ears.
The innovative design means you won’t hear yourself chewing, walking, jogging, etc. in the same way as most earbuds, and yet music and noise-canceling are intimate and effective respectively.
This makes the Elite 85t direct competitors to Apple’s open-style AirPods Pro, but with more features for either side of the mobile aisle, and a more active-ready design to boot.
Since they’re device agnostic, you can choose any of the major voice assistants (or none), and they offer all the controls you need (including volume control by default) for whichever mobile device you prefer.
Speaking of controls, they’re customizable through Jabra’s excellent Sound+ app, allowing you to configure the buds’ two easy-push buttons how you see fit.
Also customizable is noise cancelation and transparency mode, the latter of which is among the most natural-sounding you’ll hear on the market to keep you aware of your environment in style—again, a direct shot across the AirPods Pro bow.
8. Panasonic RZ-S500W
A hugely talented and affordable pair of cheap wireless earbuds.
Panasonic isn’t a brand that immediately springs to mind when you think of cheap wireless earbuds.
But perhaps it should be. The RZ-S500W are the company’s first foray into wireless noise-cancelling earbuds and they’re sensational performers, especially at this price.
Specs are thorough, with noise-cancelling tech, an Ambient Mode, twin mics for voice calls, and battery life that totals 19.5 hours (6.5hrs from the buds and 13hrs from the charging case).
A 15-minute USB-C quick-charge can deliver 70 minutes of playback.
The touch controls on each bud are responsive and intuitive, allowing you to control your music and switch between noise-cancelling modes with zero fuss.
You also get five sizes of ear tips to help with fit. We found this a little hit and miss, so we’d definitely experiment and consider mixing the sizes if it means getting a more secure fit.
Both noise-canceling and sound quality are excellent. There’s plenty of agility through the low end and loads of texture across frequencies.
Music sounds clear and there’s a great deal of refinement on show, which is to be welcomed at this price level.
To sum up, these Panasonic earbuds are superb for the money. A great buy, even if you’re not sticking to a tight budget.
9. Sony WF-1000XM3 True Wireless Earbuds
Noise-cancelling true wireless headphones that made our dreams come true
Considering it’s still rare to get noise-cancellation in earbuds at all, the fact that Sony has managed to pack it into a pair that are not only wireless, but true wireless is very impressive indeed.
The Sony WF-1000X manages to offer a level of noise-cancellation that’s very good for a pair of earbuds – it won’t offer the same isolation as a pair of over-ear cans, but if you’re after a sleek form factor then the compromise is well worth it.
There may be a few minor problems with these wireless earbuds, but we think Sony has knocked the ball out of the park with the WF-1000XM3; not only are these hands down the best-looking true wireless earbuds out there, but they combine serious noise-canceling tech with fist-pumping musicality.
10. Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2
Sennheiser has pretty much knocked it out of the park with these wireless earbuds, offering great noise cancellation alongside smart looks and stunning sound.
The sound quality, battery life, and design of the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 are truly brilliant – and they’re a really good alternative to the Sony WF-1000XM3, particularly if you prefer a more flashy design to adorn your ears.
We did find that those with smaller ears sometimes find them a little uncomfortable, however, and their high price just stops them from beating the Sony WF-1000XM3.
