Amped Wireless ALLY Whole Home Smart WiFi System Review 2021.
ALLY is a Whole Home Smart Wi-Fi System: Everyone that will transform the way your family experiences Wi-Fi. It’s a smart, safe, secure Wi-Fi that is designed with the whole family in mind. Lets see more about it below.
Controlled by an App, ALLY gives full control over how and when the internet is used, and who gets to use it. With an added layer of web security by AVG
Setup
ALLY comes with a start-up guide, which tells you to download the “Amped Wireless ALLY” app. After doing so, create an account and then turn off your cable modem.
Next, connect the ALLY router via an Ethernet cable to the modem, then turn on your modem and the ALLY router. Unfortunately, this vital initial process is missing from the included start-up guide
Once both the modem and router are powered on, follow the app instructions to link the router to your network from your smartphone password. You’ll also likely need a firmware update
Find a physical spot midway between the router and the far end of your home, Then wait between three to 10 minutes until you get a green light on the front of the extender.
A solid red light means the extender is too far from the router, orange indicates a solid but not great connection
If you get a red light, or want a stronger connection than the orange light intimates, you’ll have to unplug the extender.
Find a closer location to the router where you have an AC outlet, than wait another three-to-10 minutes or so for the extender to cycle through to a solid red
Pros
- Very good 2.4GHz and 5GHz throughput in testing.
- Multi-User Multiple Input, Multiple Output (MU-MIMO) enabled.
- Simple installation.
- Strong parental controls.
- Built-in malware protection.
Cons
- Middling MU-MIMO range performance.
- Only one LAN port on extender node.
- Additional nodes no
The Amped Wireless Ally Plus Whole Home Smart Wi-Fi System makes it easy to apply parental controls on the fly and to block users from accessing your home network.
It also offers a thoughtfully designed mobile app and uses AVG’s Online Shield security service to protect connected clients from malware and phishing threats.
The two-piece system delivered strong throughput speeds in most of our tests, but the extender’s long-range MU-MIMO performance is lacking.
It’s a solid choice if you’re looking to blanket your small to medium-size home with Wi-Fi
Unboxing and Initial Impressions
The external package is your typical generic design, everything inside is laid out in a neat, organized manner.
You’re greeted by a large “Welcome sign”, followed by a “Let’s Get Started” pamphlet, which lays out the simple 6-step process of setting everything up.
Below that, you find the two ALLY units, power cords, & Ethernet cable, with everything pre-labeled…call this “intelligent packaging”.
Security and Parental Controls
With the partnership with AVG, it’s clear that this system has security in mind
From the Ally app, every device that joined the network could be assigned to a user
For each user, you can choose to block categories of web traffic (such as Adult, Crime & Violence, Dating, Drugs, Alcohol & Tobacco, Gambling and Weapons) or types of content (blogs, email, entertainment, games, photo sharing, social media, etc.)
