Bose Portable Smart Speaker 2021 Recommended Review Update

The Bose Portable Smart Speaker is designed to radiate clear sound in all directions at the same time. Put the speaker in the middle of the party and everyone can enjoy the same experience. Or place it in the corner of the room and the sound will feel like it’s all around you. Amazing right? Read on to find out more.

The Bose Portable Home Speaker is a wireless smart speaker with a built-in rechargeable battery, wi-fi and Bluetooth connectivity.

It also includes music streaming, multi-room support, and voice control with Alexa or Google Assistant.

Bose Portable Home Speaker Audio: Loud with a Catch

The Bose Portable Home Speaker’s mono-signal technology tunes the speaker’s sound for its surroundings, similar to what Auto Trueplay does for Sonos speakers.

Three passive radiators, a high-excursion driver and a deflector distribute audio evenly for all-around balanced listening.

This concoction has its pros and cons. It delivers powerful volume levels but at the expense of smooth sound.

I left the Bose Portable Home Speaker on my deck while I took my dog for a walk down the block, and I could still hear remnants of Spotify’s New Music Friday playlist 10 houses away.

But within a few feet of the speaker, Travis Scott’s latest single sounded unbalanced on full volume.

The speaker performs best at medium-to-low volume despite its capacity for massive noise. While the Sonos Move doesn’t get as loud as the Bose Portable Home Speaker, the Move sounds excellent at its max volume level.

Slick Speaker Design:

The cylindrical Portable Home Speaker comes in black or silver and measures 7.5 inches high, about 4.0 inches in diameter, and weighs 2.4 pounds.

A thick, clothbound handle for easy portability is connected to the top portion of the speaker, and a rubberized base stabilizes the body as it sits upright.

The lower half is covered in wraparound grille, behind which a mono driver delivers sound in all directions.

There are also grille perforations on the top panel, encircling the controls and protecting the mic array.

The top panel houses touch-sensitive controls for power, mic mute, and Bluetooth. A voice assistant button lets you speak to Alexa or Google Assistant, or you can keep the mic on and use wake words.

Amazing Speaker Performance:

The audio quality offered by the Bose Portable Home Speaker is very good indeed, with a warm, well-balanced soundstage.

It doesn’t quite have the pure fidelity of the Sonos Move, or the detail, but as the lead vocal melts into Appalachian-style harmony, every voice blends together seamlessly.

In Little Dragon’s After The Rain, thumping bass lines feel tight and controlled while hi-hats jangle above with toe-tapping musicality; meanwhile, punchy organs and brass lines pulse beneath smooth jazz vocals.

It’s a complicated mix, but the Bose Portable Home Speaker performs well, if not with the assertiveness of the Apple HomePod, which sounds altogether more exciting.

  • Powerful audio with rich bass and crisp highs.
  • Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant voice control.
  • Streams via AirPlay 2, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi.

  • Expensive.
  • Mono.
  • Speaker has trouble with deep bass at high volume levels.

Home Speaker Features

When it comes to portable speakers, battery life is everything and this Bose model comes with a respectable 12 hours of playback from a single charge

That’s more than the Sonos Move, but it pales in comparison to the 24 hours offered by the Tribit XSound Go. Still, the latter can’t compete with Bose or Sonos in terms of sound quality.

Setting up the Bose Portable Home Speaker is really easy; simply download the Bose Connect app and follow the steps to hook it up to your WiFi, choose your voice assistant of choice, and select your music and radio services.

These include Spotify, Deezer, YouTube, Amazon Music, TuneIn, and more, as well as AirPlay 2 for iPhone and iPad users.

As well being designed for life on the move, the Bose Portable Home Speaker is a smart speaker; with both Google Assistant and Alexa built-in, you get a choice between the two best voice assistants depending on which ecosystem you already use.

Sound and Performance – Strong Sound, Simple Smarts

Sound is unsurprisingly a strong suit here. The 360-degree design means the speaker sounds great from any direction, so there’s no need to be fussy about how or where you set it down.

Bose is especially bullish about the bass response, with three passive radiators packed in to deliver a really solid low-end response.

This is probably the bassiest speaker I’ve heard at this sort of size, though fortunately for the most part the bass doesn’t overpower the sound profile, though this definitely skews in that direction.

In terms of either volume or overall sound quality, this won’t quite match Bose’s bigger stationary smart speakers, but for a portable effort that has to cram in a battery and waterproofing tech too, it’s pretty impressive stuff
