But we are also guilty of wasting time on our phones. We look something up on the Internet and then all of a sudden we’ve opened five articles we want to read or videos we want to watch.

We intend to just check out that one notification that we got and then end up blindly scrolling through social media.

How to Check Screen Time on Android

The easiest way for you to check screen time on Android devices is already built into your device.

If you navigate to your Android Settings, you can either search for or scroll down to find Digital Wellbeing and parental controls.

Here, you can see where you spend your time, how many times you unlock your phone, and so much more. Let’s look a little deeper at what Digital Wellbeing is and how it can help you.

What is Digital Wellbeing?

Digital Wellbeing is a built-in way to check and monitor screen time on your or your child’s Android device.

Aside from just checking how much time you’re spending in each of your apps, you can set goals and timers for yourself to lessen your time in front of your screen.

It’s no secret that our phones are important and necessary, but do they need to take up such huge time chunks out of our days?

Google created Digital Wellbeing to help people easily disconnect throughout the day and at the end of the day.

How to Set Up Digital Wellbeing on Android

Android’s Digital Wellbeing feature tracks your daily screen time, notifications, and phone unlocks.

The Digital Wellbeing feature is accessible through your device’s settings. You need to enable it as it’s not on by default. Here’s how to set it up. 

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Digital Wellbeing & parental controls.
  3. Tap the three-dot menu on the top right and select Manage your data.
  4. Toggle on Daily device usage.
  5. Your smartphone will now log app usage, notifications, and device unlocks.

Keep Your Screen Time in Check

The Digital Wellbeing app has two types of tools to help you reduce screen time and distractions: Ways to disconnect and Reduce interruptions.

Ways to disconnect include app timers, bedtime mode, and focus mode. The Reduce interruptions sections have shortcuts to app notification management and Do Not Disturb mode.

If there is a specific app that you just can’t force yourself to stop using or cut back on, this feature is great.

You can allow yourself a specific amount of time each day to spend on various apps. There are preset options of 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, or you can make your own custom timer.

Once you’ve hit your screen time limit for the day, you cannot use that app until the timer resets at midnight.

How to Set Up Bedtime Mode

Bedtime mode helps you wind down by silencing your phone and turning the screen grayscale, so you’re not staying up late scrolling through social media or reading.

You can set up the bedtime mode based on a schedule or when you plug in the phone to charge before heading to bed. In both scenarios, you set a sleep time and wake time.

Tap Customize to have Do Not Disturb to turn on when you go to sleep and choose whether the screen goes grayscale.

Digital Wellbeing Focus Mode

Focus mode is one of the best things Digital Wellbeing has to offer.

When you’re in Focus mode, pretty much all of your apps are disabled, forcing you to stop using your phone as a crutch and get stuff done. You can choose which apps are allowed and which apps are not.

As a default, Focus mode comes with Work time and Me time. Both are set to only allow four apps: Clock, Phone, Google Play Store, and Settings.

However, you can add extra apps if you want them to be available to you during Focus mode.

You can also create custom Focus modes if you wanted something extra in addition to Work time and Me time. Maybe Workout time would be a good Focus mode?

Check Screen Time

Of course, you can turn Focus mode off and on whenever you please. So it will ultimately be up to you to exercise willpower and not turn Focus mode off.

When all of your apps are grayed out, it serves as a reminder that you need and want to focus. Hopefully that will motivate you to stay productive!

Take Control of Your Screen Time

Knowing how much time you spend on your phone is important for self awareness.

Even if you don’t want to cut back on any screen time right now, it’s still useful to know how to check screen time so you can monitor it.

Say you find yourself not being able to finish a project on time. Or, maybe you don’t have enough time to work out.

Checking your screen time can give you valuable insight that can help you manage your time better.

Check Screen Time through Power Usage

If you don’t want to install any third-party apps that will allow you to tell your screen time, your phone’s power status got you covered. Of course, it shows battery usage and time on battery, which can be translated into screen time.

Here’s how to check screen time through Power Usage:

  1. Go to Settings > Battery.
  2. Tap the 3-dot menu, and go to Battery usage.
  3. Tap the 3 dot menu again, and choose Show full device usage.

The instructions above are for stock Android or Android One. The steps may vary on non-stock ROMs. But the principle stays the same, as all you have to do is look for the battery usage.

Install Usage Time

You can always go with a third-party app. There are a couple of options in the Play Store, but I recommend Usage Time(not sponsored by), because of its simplicity.

The app just gives you what you want to know, without any unnecessary features and distractions. It just shows time spent with the screen on for the current day, divided between used apps.

There’s also a graph of the usage time, so you can easily keep the record of the phone use for the past week.

And that’s about it, as you can see, even though Android doesn’t offer the Screen Time feature by default like iOS does, there are still easy ways to check your usage status.
