Zmodo Torch Pro 2020 Detailed Review & its Benefits.
Zmodo Torch Pro: The home security camera industry has made steady progress over the past couple of decades and recently has begun producing new and inventive solutions to everyday problems, even expanding out into unexpected areas, The Zmodo Torch Pro is one to look out for.
Meet the Torch Pro.
Home monitoring is as easy as changing a light bulb—literally. The Zmodo Torch is powered by your light socket, giving you instant HD video monitoring. It connects to your WiFi, allowing you to access your Torch from anywhere, at any time with the Zmodo app.
Torch pairs with its connected doorbell, using Torch’s camera and the connected doorbell’s microphone to let you answer your door directly from your smartphone. See, hear, and speak to your visitors, even if you’re not at home.
Torch Pro comes packaged with a bonus Beam Alert WiFi range extender. Beam Alert ensures that both the Torch and doorbell have a strong connection at your porch.
Design and Features
The Torch Pro comes with a Wi-Fi-enabled LED light bulb that has a video camera embedded in its side. The multi-color bulb is rated at 350 lumens with a 5,000K color temperature.
It has an E26 base and a silver metallic casing with a soft white lens. Embedded in the side of the casing is a 720p camera with a 4X digital zoom and a 132-degree field of view.
At 5.5 by 2.9 inches (HW), it’s bigger than your typical light bulb and maybe a tight fit for some outdoor fixtures.
The bulb is rated to last for 100,000 hours, or over 11 years of nonstop use. When it dies, there’s no way to replace it without also replacing the camera.
Zmodo includes a Beam Alert range extender in case your doorway light and doorbell are located too far away from your Wi-Fi router. It measures 4.1 by 2.4 by 2.0 inches and is glossy white.
It plugs directly into a three-pronged wall outlet and can extend an 802.11b/g/n signal by up to 656 feet. Since my front door is very close to my router, I didn’t need to use it, but it’s a welcome inclusion.
- 2-way audio and a movable camera
- PIR sensor that triggers an alert when motion is detected
- The wide view angle of 105 degrees
- Weatherproof and cloud compatible
Ingeniously Simple Setup
Typically, a home doorbell system requires a considerable amount of setup including hours of work as well as electrical tools and knowledge.
With the advanced features supported by Torch Pro, you’d expect that it’d be even more complex. Conversely, setup is actually quick and easy as the door light featuring the high definition camera fits directly in your existing light fixture with any standard E26 socket.
This ease of use is further complemented by the fact that it uses your light fixture for electrical power so that you don’t have to rely on a battery or connect it to your home wiring.
The doorbell unit featuring a two-way audio system is equally easy to install. There are two wires connected to your existing doorbell, so all you have to do is unscrew and remove it, connect those two wires to Torch Pro’s connected doorbell unit, screw it in and you’re ready to go within minutes.
The Torch Pro provided very good video quality in testing. Daytime video was sharp, with punchy colors and no pincushion distortion.
Night vision video showed good definition out to 10 feet, but became soft and lacked detail beyond that. In addition, to live, the camera records video and stores it in the cloud for 24 hours for free, but extended storage plans are not yet available.
- Easy to install.
- Multi-colored light.
- Sharp 720p video.
- Good audio quality.
- A bulky bulb may not fit some light enclosures.
- Does not integrate with other smart home devices or support IFTTT.
With the Zmodo Torch Pro, you can use your smartphone or tablet to view live video of the area outside of your doorway and receive alerts when someone approaches or rings your doorbell.
It also stores that video in the cloud for a day for free. It’s fairly easy to install and offers lighting and alert notification scheduling, but it’s a standalone system that doesn’t work with other devices such as smart locks and connected lighting, nor does it work with other Zmodo devices.
If you prefer an outdoor light/camera device with a bit more interoperability, the Netatmo Presence is a good choice. It doesn’t have multi-color lighting, but it offers excellent motion detection, sharp 1080p video, and local video storage. It also interacts with other IFTTT-enabled devices.
There are actually many home security camera devices and two-way audio systems available, but too many of them don’t provide the performance and durability of the Torch Pro.
Additionally, the simple appearance quality of the door light shouldn’t be taken for granted, as it provides beautiful, customization light that will allow you to create the perfect atmosphere for your home.
